Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 2024
If you are eligible for breast screening, it's important to attend your appointment and get screened.
The NHS Breast Screening Programme began in 1988. It aims to invite all women aged from 50 until aged 71 years, for breast screening once every three years. Nationally the programme screens over 2 million women each year and diagnoses about 16,500 breast cancers annually.
The aim of breast screening is to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage, often before the woman is aware of any problem.
Early detection may mean simpler and more successful treatment. Scientific evidence shows that regular breast screening, between the ages of 50 until aged 71 years, reduces the death rate from breast cancer.
Invitation to Your Breast Screening Appointment
About Your Appointment
If you're between the ages of 50 and 71, you will receive an invitation letter for a breast screening mammogram every three years.
You don't need to contact us as they will ensure that you receive your invitation at the appropriate time. However, from your 71st birthday, we will not automatically invite you, but you can still request screening every three years by contacting your local breast screening unit. We urge you to continue with your breast screening even after the age of 71 since the risk of breast cancer doesn't stop at that age.
Once you receive your invitation letter, you can book, change, or cancel your appointment online. Please note that you can only use this form if you've received an invitation letter for breast screening. Also, note that we're currently managing appointments no more than six weeks in advance.
We have various convenient locations where you can get screened. Find out more where we screen.
